From New England News Forum
The Journalist and Teacher Collaborative
A proposed project for the New England News Forum and Media Giraffe Project
The mission of the Journalist and Teacher Collaborative is to emphasize that this isn't about curriculum reform as much as it is about people reform -- getting teachers and journalists to see each other has having a common purpose -- to give us the tools we need to be effective citizens.
Possible media and schools initiatives
- Creating atmosphere where media professionals are welcomed in schools
- Creating resources that help teachers to use news in lesson plans
- A speakers bureau for classrooms
- Teachers could request somebody and we send out.
- Resource base of news speakers
- Offering stories about media that matters
- A website, updated daily, which provides critical analysis of the coverage of a current news event (or events) in specific topical areas.
The overall goal: Make it easy for teachers to incorporate current-events
and news materials into curriculum, whether web or print.
Focus on middle schools (7/8) where the teach-to-the-test mandates are not
as severe and when kids are beginning to look outside home/school.
Research approach
- Start by seeing what's going on in a sample of the schools.
- Find out about human capital available in a state, help teachers connect with them.
- How do we involve media organizations in help making that happen?
